Asis

Kalenjin (Kenya); related Nilotic peoples · East Africa

The sun god and supreme being of the Kalenjin peoples of Kenya. Asis is invoked at dawn and at solemn moments and is associated with the warmth that sustains all life. The Kalenjin traditionally prayed facing the rising sun, and oaths sworn under Asis bound the swearer for life. His name is preserved in the names of many highland communities in Kenya's Rift Valley.
