Akuj

The supreme deity of the Turkana of northern Kenya, residing in the sky and presiding over rain, cattle, and the lifeblood of the pastoralist economy. Akuj is invoked by elders during droughts and at the seasonal celebrations that follow successful rains. The Turkana cosmos is structured around his benevolence and the periodic ngakirwakineta, ceremonies where the community sacrifices a bull and reads the omens in its entrails.
