Ngai

Kikuyu, Kamba, and Embu (Kenya) · East Africa

The supreme god of the Kikuyu and related Bantu peoples of central Kenya, said to dwell on Mount Kenya (Kĩrĩnyaga). Ngai gave the first man Gĩkũyũ a wife (Mũmbi) and their nine daughters became the founders of the nine Kikuyu clans. Prayers and sacrifices are traditionally directed towards the mountain, and oaths sworn facing it carry particular weight.
