Engai

Maasai (Kenya, Tanzania) · East Africa

The supreme deity of the Maasai, conceived in two aspects: Engai Narok (the black god), benevolent and rain-bringing, and Engai Nanyokie (the red god), wrathful and dispatching drought and lightning. Engai gave cattle to the Maasai as a sacred trust at the beginning of time, which is the theological foundation for the Maasai claim that all cattle in the world rightfully belong to them.
