Dan

The serpent deity of the Fon and Ewe, representing motion, continuity, and the umbilical thread between heaven and earth. Dan takes many forms, of which Aido-Hwedo is the most cosmic. The python is sacred to Dan and is given right of way in some Fon-speaking towns; the most famous Dan temple, the Temple of the Pythons at Ouidah, still houses live snakes treated as living embodiments of the god.
