Sakpata

Fon (Benin), Ewe (Togo) · West Africa
The Fon earth deity and god of smallpox and skin diseases, eldest son of Mawu-Lisa. Sakpata is closely related to the Yoruba Sopona, with which he shares both the affliction-as-judgement role and the moniker of the angry one. His worship was historically secretive due to the fear his name evoked, and his priests were both healers and harbingers, called upon to mediate epidemics.
