Mawu-Lisa

Fon (Benin), Ewe (Togo, Ghana) · West Africa
The dual supreme deity of the Fon, conceived as twin siblings or as a single being with two faces. Mawu, the moon, embodies coolness, wisdom, and the night, while Lisa, the sun, embodies strength, heat, and the day. Together they are the offspring of Nana Buluku and the parents of the lesser Vodun. The Mawu-Lisa pair represents the balanced complementarity that the Fon see as the structuring principle of the world.
