Aido-Hwedo

Fon (Benin); diaspora to Haiti as Ayida-Weddo · West Africa
The rainbow-serpent of the Fon, said to coil around the earth to keep it from sinking into the primordial sea. Aido-Hwedo emerged before all things and supports the cosmos with its body, feeding on iron forged by the smiths beneath the ocean. In Haitian Vodou the serpent becomes Ayida-Weddo, consort of Damballa, and the rainbow is read as her manifestation.
