The Zulu first ancestor and originator of humanity, who emerged from a bed of reeds (uhlanga) and brought forth the first people and the institutions of marriage, kingship, and medicine. Some traditions place him as a supreme being, others as the eldest ancestor below uMvelinqangi (the source of all). His name literally means the very old, very great one.
