Ngewo

Mende (Sierra Leone, Liberia) · West Africa
The supreme creator god of the Mende. Ngewo is described as the maker of all things who, having created humans, retreated to the sky when they grew quarrelsome and demanding. He is not approached directly but through ancestral spirits and the secret-society medicine of the Poro and Sande, the two foundational initiatory institutions of Mende life.
