A mhondoro (lion spirit) and ancestral spirit of the Shona, who manifested in the medium Charwe Nyakasikana during the First Chimurenga (the 1896-97 uprising against British colonial rule). Nehanda's prophecy that her bones shall rise was taken up by Zimbabwean nationalists during the Second Chimurenga and is engraved in the country's founding myth. She was executed by the colonial state in 1898.
