Heitsi-Eibib

A shape-shifting culture hero and trickster of the Khoekhoe peoples, credited with creating much of the land and teaching the first people how to hunt and survive. Heitsi-Eibib died and was reborn many times, and the cairns of stones found throughout southern Africa are said to mark the places where he lies buried. Travellers traditionally add a stone to each cairn as they pass for luck on the road.
