Princess Inikpi

Igala (Nigeria) · West Africa
The daughter of Attah Ayegba Om'Idoko of the Igala kingdom, who was buried alive at the gates of Idah to secure victory over the Bini in the 17th century. The diviners had prophesied that only the sacrifice of the Attah's most beloved child could save the kingdom, and Inikpi volunteered. A bronze statue of her stands at the centre of Idah today, and her story is recited at every Igala coronation.
