Queen Moremi

Yoruba (Ile-Ife, Nigeria) · West Africa
The legendary queen of Ile-Ife who allowed herself to be captured by the Igbo raiders who had been terrorising her people, learned their tactics in captivity, and returned to lead Ile-Ife to victory. She had promised her favourite deity, the Esinmirin spirit, anything in exchange for her people's salvation, and was made to sacrifice her only son Oluorogbo. Moremi remains one of the most venerated figures in Yoruba memory.
