Bayajida

Hausa (Nigeria); Daura kingdom and the Hausa Bakwai · West Africa

The legendary founder of the Hausa Bakwai (the seven Hausa kingdoms). Bayajida is said to have arrived in Daura from the east, slain the serpent Sarki that had been blocking the town's only well, and married the queen of Daura. Their descendants, according to the myth, became the rulers of the original seven Hausa city-states. The story sits at the heart of Hausa political and cultural identity.
