Oro Masquerade

A secret society and masquerade of Yoruba towns, traditionally invoked at night to enforce moral order, mete out justice, and conduct funerary rites for elders. During Oro, women and the uninitiated are forbidden from the streets, and the bullroarer (which produces the distinctive Oro voice) is sounded through the town. The society remains active in many Yoruba communities and intersects with modern debates over public space and gender.
