Idemmili

Igbo (Anambra State, Nigeria) · West Africa
The Igbo goddess of the Idemmili River and patron deity of Nnewi and the surrounding Anambra communities. Idemmili is associated with purity, the python (her sacred animal), and the wellbeing of women. Pythons in her domain are not killed but treated with reverence, and the goddess is honoured at the annual Iri-ji Idemmili festival, where her priestesses preside.
