Anansa

Efik (Calabar, Nigeria) · West Africa
The Efik goddess of the sea and patron deity of Calabar. Anansa is believed to reside in the Cross River and the Atlantic beyond, and is associated with fertility, wealth, and the safe return of fishermen. Her cult historically intersected with the maritime trade that made Calabar a major port, and offerings are still made at riverside shrines in her honour.
