Ekwensu

Igbo (Nigeria) · West Africa
The Igbo god of war, trickery, bargains, and trade. Ekwensu was once invoked by warriors before battle and by traders before market days, in both cases for the cunning needed to prevail. Colonial missionaries equated him with Satan, a translation that has stuck in modern Christian Igbo usage, but the precolonial figure was an ambivalent power associated with the unpredictable currents of fortune.
