The loa of the cemetery, death, and resurrection in Haitian Vodou, and the leader of the Ghede family of spirits. Baron Samedi is depicted in a black tailcoat, a top hat, and dark glasses with one lens missing, smoking a cigar and drinking spiced rum. He is at once feared and ribald, presiding over the threshold between life and death and granting permission for the dead to pass.
