The hero of the Nyanga epic, born already speaking, walking, and carrying a magical conga-scepter. Mwindo is rejected by his father, who tries repeatedly to kill him, but the child survives each attempt and ultimately confronts his father, descends to the underworld, and returns to establish moral order. The Mwindo epic is one of the most studied oral traditions of Central Africa and was transcribed in the 1950s.
