A shape-shifting being of the Kanuri and broader Lake Chad region, said to be a human by day and a hyena by night. The Bultungin is associated with the town of Kabultiloa, whose inhabitants are reputed to all be were-hyenas of one or another lineage. Stories of the Bultungin overlap with similar shape-shifter traditions across the Sahel and into Ethiopia, where the bouda hyena-people occupy a similar position in folklore.
